Western esotericism

The academic study of "Western" esotericism is a recent development that only began in the 20th century. I choose to put "Western" in quotes to indicate the anachronistic connotations of the word, and also to show how esotericism is inextricably linked to cultures outside of the "West."

Before epidemiologists began modelling disease, it was the job of astrologers (2020) — Michelle Pfeffer explains the importance of astrology to European public health prior to the Enlightenment, Scientific Revolution, and advent of germ theory.
